Golf Courses in and around Solihull

Introduction

Solihull is a large town in the West Midlands, located 9 miles southeast of Birmingham city centre and just 4 miles to the southwest of Birmingham International Airport. Solihull town centre is just 1 mile away from Junction 5 of the M42 motorway, which, in turn, provides easy access to the M5, M6 and M40 motorways networks. The diversity and, indeed, beauty of the West Midlands landscape lends itself very well to golf and their a number of fines courses to be found in and around, Solihull.

Copt Heath Golf Club, for example, offers a classic parkland course originally designed by Harry Vardon and subsequently enhanced by Harry S. Colt, whose principal contribution was the 96 bunkers that adorn the course. At 6,528 yards from the white tees and 6,190 yards from the yellow, the course is only of medium length, but, nevertheless, provides a challenging test for even the most accurate golfers. In fact, the course is used regularly for Open Championship qualifying competitions.

Ladbrook Park Golf Club features another parkland course and, indeed, another Harry S. Colt design. Water is very much a feature of Ladbrook Park, however, with the brook that meanders through its 144 acres coming into play on no fewer than 11 of the 18 holes. Additional ponds are also present to trap the unwary, or inaccurate, but the course is in excellent condition throughout and can be enjoyed by golfers of any age or ability.

Another memorable course in the Solihull area is that offered by the Shirley Golf Club, which is located in the River Blythe Valley, just off the M42 motorway. The course measures 6,524 yards off the white tees and 6,288 yards off the yellow, but tree-lined and undulating fairways make it a fair, if challenging, test for any golfer. The course is mature, surrounded by fields and woodlands and drains very well, making play possible all year round.

A new golf club, in comparison to many of the others in the Solihull area, is the aptly-named West Midlands Golf Club, which opened in 2003. The course measure 6,624 yards from the blue tees (reserved for major competitions), 6,288 yards from the white and 6,010 yards from the yellow and its tees and greens are built to USGA ("United States Golf Association") specifications. An extensive drainage system allows play to take place all year round, without the need for winter tees, or greens.

Yet another highly regarded and attractive parkland course can be found at Olton Golf Club, located just one mile from the town centre of Solihull and easy accessible from the M42 motorway. The course, which measures 6,230 yards from the white tees and 5,970 yards, covers 95 acres and presents a decent test for golfers of all levels of ability. A catering team is on hand to provide an all-day menu of homemade meals and bar snacks for hungry golfers, while a fully stocked pro shop provides a comprehensive range of golf equipment, including Callaway golf clubs, for example.
